Competent on the corporate side, but communication was inconsistent

I engaged Andrew Lamb and his team at Gowling WLG for assistance with a mid-sized corporate acquisition in the energy sector. My company was purchasing a smaller firm with assets in Alberta, and Andrew's recognition in Corporate and Energy Law by Best Lawyers was a primary factor in our selection. His substantive knowledge of the oil and gas regulatory landscape was evident and provided solid grounding for the transaction's due diligence phase. The legal work product itself was thorough, particularly regarding the transfer of mineral rights and navigating provincial regulations. However, the experience was somewhat mixed. While Andrew is clearly an expert, there were periods where communication lagged, making it difficult to get timely updates on minor but important points. Response times from junior staff were occasionally slow, and at times, the process felt more reactive than proactive. For a straightforward matter, his expertise is undeniable, but the overall client service and management of expectations felt just adequate. The deal closed successfully, which is the ultimate goal, but the journey there highlighted some areas for improvement in client liaison.
